Overview
MCPAWS was created in 1998 to fill a void in animal welfare in the city of McCall and was later expanded to include the West Central mountains region of Idaho. The mission of the organization is “Transforming lives by strengthening the human-animal connection” and the vision is “A humane community where all animals are well cared for and valued”.


The MCPAWS organization consists of the animal shelter, thrift store and veterinary hospital.
MCPAWS is seeking a passionate and motivated individual to lead the organization as its next Executive Director. Under the general guidance of the volunteer board of directors, the Executive Director is responsible for devising the strategy to achieve the objectives of the organization and actively manage all of the affairs of the shelter, thrift store, and veterinary hospital.


The Executive Director directly supports a senior leadership staff of four including the Shelter Manager, the Development Director, the Thrift Store Manager and the Veterinary Medical Director and will also work collaboratively with the part-time Chief Financial Officer to ensure financial sustainability of the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Development:

  • Oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of MCPAWS programs and services in alignment with the mission and established board policies and procedures. Executes board approved policies and plans that inform and educate the public regarding MCPAWS mission, strategic goals, and activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors in strategic planning activities. Work with leadership team to develop implementation plan to achieve strategic initiatives and goals, as identified in the strategic plan, and create buy in amongst MCPAWS staff.

Board of Directors:

  • Implements policies adopted by the Board of Directors.
  • Act as key liaison between board and staff.
  • Reports to the board of directors on the success, challenges, and overall status of MCPAWS services and programs and recommends appropriate policies for consideration. Provides information in a timely, transparent, and comprehensive manner.
  • Attends monthly board meetings as requested.
  • Meet at least once times/year with each individual board member.
  • Meet with the Board Chair once a month, or as needed.

Leadership and Personnel:

  • Provides direct oversight to MCPAWS leadership team including recruitment, hiring, training, professional development, and succession planning.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a culture which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top- quality individuals. Guides staff development and professional growth via regular performance evaluations for all employees.
  • Ensure that key personnel documents are in place and board approved, job descriptions are developed, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  • Resolve formal personnel grievances and supervise internal conflict management according to MCPAWS policy and procedures established by the board of directors.
  • Review and submit timesheets for bi-monthly payroll. Work with payroll contractor to manage and track overtime, holiday pay, PTO, and discounts for veterinary services for all employees.
  • Work with employee benefits broker to manage employee health benefits package, organize and implement annual open enrollment, manage new hire benefits orientations and elections throughout the year.

Financial Planning and Stewardship: (in collaboration with with part-time CFO)

  • Develop annual operating budget (approximately $2 million) for board approval and make every reasonable effort to operate within approved budget.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and board to develop and maintain robust financial management, internal control processes, and day to day accounting practices that reflect nonprofit accounting best practices.
  • Respond to major fluctuations in the fiscal health of the organization in a timely manner.
  • Assist Accounting and Finance Manager in managing duties like online banking, monthly reconciliations and expense tracking, reimbursements, online bill payments, company credit card management and reconciliation.
  • Review and approve all organizational revenue and deposits, expenses, account reconciliations, adjusting journal entries. Act as signer on all bank accounts and main check signer. Review and approve monthly bank statements to ensure no fraudulent activity is present. Submit reports of financial activities as needed to the Finance Committee to ensure integrity and transparency of financial operations.
  • Meet with the Finance Committee as requested.

Fundraising and Public Relations:

  • Oversee fundraising activities and act as chief solicitor. Provide guidance to Development Director in creation of annual fundraising plans, including general fundraising, planned giving, major gifts, special events, and grants. Actively participate in cultivating new and lapsed donors and growing relationships with current donors.
  • Negotiate and maintain annual contracts and requests for funding from local government municipalities in exchange for animal sheltering services.
  • Act as spokesperson for the organization, develop and maintain positive public relations for MCPAWS.
  • Promotes visibility of MCPAWS to funders, businesses, and others through involvement in community affairs.
  • Mentor and motivate leadership to grow MCPAWS impact through programs and fundraising.
  • Participates with other organizations and agencies in cooperative endeavors to further the mission of MCPAWS.
  • Resolves interagency disputes and escalated client grievances.

Operations, Programs, and Services:

  • Ensures animal care and treatment is skilled, compassionate, and reflective of industry best practices.
  • Evaluates services and programs offered by MCPAWS for efficacy and efficiency. Recommends and guides adjustments to leadership team as needed. Includes, but not limited to programs dealing with volunteers and volunteer management, animal in-takes and outcomes, community spay/neuter and other safety net programs.
  • Ensures adherence to any federal, state, and local laws and regulations that pertain to any MCPAWS operations with the highest ethical standards possible.
  • Oversees maintenance plans and projects for facilities improvement, equipment repair and upgrades including capital campaigns and major construction projects. Select, develop, and maintain qualified contractors.
  • Ensure that sound risk management policies are in place. Responsible for renewing property, liability, and directors and officers insurance policies as necessary. Acts as main point of contact for insurance brokers.
  • Develop and maintain, as needed, standard operating procedures for all operations. Review and update regularly to ensure SOPs reflect current industry standards and operations.

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people, including major donors, foundation partners, elected officials, boards and staff, candidates for office, organizational members, consultants and contractors, national partners, and media in an effective and positive way.
  • Quick thinker and ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and a commitment to racial equity and justice as organizational practice and culture.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, Google suite, Quickbooks online and the ability to navigate as needed in donor database software.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of business operations, financial statements, and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit administration
  • Animal welfare experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3-year experience in management role – preference for experience working in nonprofit management.
