The Cabin is a Boise literary arts organization dedicated to providing programs for readers and writers of all ages, through exceptional programs, education, and community gatherings.  Our offices and classrooms are in a recently renovated 1940's forestry building between the greenbelt and Boise main branch public library.

The Cabin’s Summer Writing Camps are weeklong literary adventures for Idaho kids in grades 3-12. Each camp is led by a professional writer who designs camp curriculum based on creative writing enrichment in their genre of expertise: poetry, fiction, memoir, playwriting, and screenwriting. Through active, imaginative writing experiences, Cabin camps engage kids in the power of reading and writing as lifelong practice. The Cabin is committed to making our camps more accessible to writers with disabilities by providing individualized support as needed. 

Key Accountabilities 

  • Serve as teaching assistant for summer writing camps with campers who are neurodivergent or have special health, accessibility, or behavioral needs.
  • Support, assist, and provide accommodations for individual campers with special health, accessibility, and behavioral needs. 

Essential Functions 

  • Assists teaching-writers leading camps with neurodivergent campers or campers who have special health, accessibility, or behavioral needs. This includes: 
    • Supporting individual campers with whatever they need to write awesome work
    •   Keeping track of supplies 
    • Participating in games and lessons
    •   Accompanying the teaching-writer and campers on field trips
    •  Making photocopies
    • Taking attendance
    •  Collaborating with volunteer assistants 
    •   Encouraging students and being an all-around good role model
    • Supports, assists, and provides accommodations for individual campers with disabilities as needed 
  • Ensures the safety of assigned camp’s campers out in the community by enforcing The Cabin’s Community Conduct and Safety Policy
  • Communicates with camp teaching-writer, Education Programs Manager, and camper parents about camper progress and challenges
  • Reports on camp experiences in an end-of-season report
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Desired Qualifications

  •  6 months experience working with (or volunteering with) individuals with disabilities. 
  •   Knowledge of best practices for working with kids with special health, accessibility, and behavioral needs
  • Ability to teach, support, and encourage campers with a variety of access needs. 
  • Ability to recognize behaviors that may require intervention and to redirect or support campers appropriately
  • A passion for The Cabin’s mission to forge community through the voices of all readers, writers, and learners

Temporary PT, 20 hours, M-F, either 8:30 AM-12:30 PM or 12:30-4:30 PM (schedule may vary)

*Training will be held in mid to late May, and the position starts June 1st and runs through July 31st, 2026
